The Social Scientist

Bob Edmison was born in Virginia in the US and is currently a Collegiate Professor of Computer Science at Virginia Tech University. He has spent over 20 years as a professional software engineer and has been employed by his university since 2001. He enjoys some audio engineering on the side for his local church and has tried over one thousand different kinds of beer.

The Biologist

Duncan Hull is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Computer Science at The University of Manchester. He has spent the last decade working as an industrial experience & employability tutor for computer science undergraduate students, encouraging them to complete internships before they graduate, either during summer or as a sandwich year. However, he has his roots in biology and has had what he terms a very ‘squiggly’ career progression.

The Proud Public Servant

In the time of floppy disks and large, bulky PCs, you would find Fernando in Argentina programming his school’s computer. His lifelong interest was sparked early and was taken further at the University of Buenos Aires, where he studied it for his bachelor’s, master’s, and even completed a Ph.D. in formal verification of distributed systems.

The Animator

Sameer had notebooks filled with sketches as a child, having always nurtured a creative bug inside of him. His love for illustration developed into a passion for animation, music, architecture, and his other artistic interests, all playing a role in his innovation of E-learning.

The Self-Learner

JD Carlston Senior Director of Architecture at Pluralsight JD has a passion for learning; they love painting, writing poetry, and creating sculptures. Code also caught their attention, and without completing their undergraduate studies they have still managed to shape their desired career through a philosophy of self-teaching.   Chemical Engineering JD Carlston grew up in Colorado and Utah, […]

The Physicist At Heart

Ayesha Afzal grew up in Lahore, Pakistan in a family who loved education and the possibilities it can bring you in life. In her childhood, she wanted to solve any kind of puzzle she could get her hands on and would aspire to be an engineer despite societal pressure against it. She greatly appreciates her late father, a mathematician who inspired her independent thinking which she carries with her throughout her career.

The Language Lover

Charles Wallace combines his experience as a computer scientist, linguist, and software developer to drive his research in exploring how humans can better understand, build, and use software. He has also founded two student-run outreach programs which focus on computer science education in the local Michigan area: BASIC (Building Adult Skills in Computing) and Copper Country Coders.

The Brain-Picker

A brain-picker at heart, Marian explored and documented the thinking of expert software developers and problem solvers throughout her career. In the early age of software development, she notes, a diverse background was part of the ‘typical’ computer science pathway.
